Glycolic Acid chemical Peel

Glycolic Acid is part of the alpha hydroxy family. Alpha hydroxy acids are produced naturally from fruits and foods. They include lactic acid which is derived from sour milk, malic acid from apples and critic acid.

A Glycolic acid  chemical peel is derived from sugar cane and is the smallest in molecule size of all alpha hydroxy acids. This means it penetrates the skin more easily than other alpha hydroxy acids resulting in more dramatic faster results. So a glycolic chemical peel can be seen an a heavy duty exfoliation session.

How does a Glycolic acid chemical peel work?

As we age and accumulate skin damage, the rate at which skin cells renew themselves slows down. It takes on average 28 days for there to be a turnover of cells on young person and 35 for older people. The result is the surface of the skin becomes blocked clogged with dead roughened skin cells.

Glycolic acid and Hyperpigmentation

Application of Gycolic Acid in the form of a chemical Peel will loosen the glue like substance that binds skin cells together. So allowing new skin to surface more quickly and easily.  So if skin discolorations sits on the surface of the skin (epidermis) a glycolic chemical will help remove it with regular applications by loosening and removing the top (discolored) layers. Another benefit of glycolic acid chemical peel is the effect it has on acne conditions by unblocking follicles which lead to acne conditions. The new skin may also have a more rejuvenated look producing a more even colour and smoother texture.

An additional benefit of glycolic peels is continous use of these peels may increase cell turnover and improve the production of collagen ( the protein in the skin that prevents the skin from wrinkling and saggaing).

Glycolic applications can be done in a beauty salon or using an glycolic acid chemical home peel kit. Obviously in salon treatments use a higher percentage of glycolic acid for glycolic peels.
Salon treatments because of short time duration are sometimes called lunchtime peels. The can be complete in about 15-20 minutes, and can be repeated every 1-2 weeks.

Strength
Glycolic acid chemical peels can range from 20% - 70% depending on the sensitivity of the skin and how severe the problem is.

What do you feel
With Salon treatments you feel stinging, which will disappear after a few minutes. Your skin area may take on a sunburn appearance becoming pink or red (depending on your skin tone) but should disappear by end of the day or so. A small amount of skin peeling may also happen over the next few days.

Salon Costs
£100 for ½ hour treatment, although a course of treatment is normally recommended so the concentration of glycolic acid chemical peel can be gradually increased.
