Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation

What is hyperpigmentation?

Dermatologist describes hyperpigmentation as darkening of the skin, normally as a result of increased melanin when skin cells produce more pigment (melanin). This can be in epidermal or dermal layers of the skin. Generally when your skin is darker or lighter than is normal for your skin. It can cover small or large areas of your skin.

One form of hyperpigmentation is liver spots. This is normally the direct result of years sun exposure.  These spots normally congregate on the face and back of the hands - areas that most exposed to the sun.
Officially they are called solar lentigines.
